What are your thoughts on Calabar’s chances at Champs 2024?

“Under the guidance of Coach Corey Bennett, Calabar are certainly hopeful and must feel encouraged by their chances to challenge for the Mortimer Geddes Trophy. However, it is widely known that the team from 61 Red Hills Road is still rebuilding, having moved on from Michael Clarke after the 2022 season. Under Bennett’s first year in charge Calabar finished third at Champs with 207 points, that’s 159 behind winners Kingston College (366) and 92 points adrift of second-placed Jamaica College (299). I think this year, while they will be more competitive, they will have their work cut out and will need assistance right across the board if they are to really have a go at KC. As it stands they may very well move up a place if the Corporate Area Championships are anything to go by; anything more is brawta!

Calabar High are still in the rebuilding mode in Coach Corey Bennett’s second season in charge and are still some distance from being contenders but, as we saw last year, they will still command some respect and will help decide who will take the Mortimer Geddes Trophy. I expect most of their points will come from the lower classes — Class 2 and Class 3.

Corey Bennett and his team have done a great job since taking over the Calabar team. The points accumulated at last year’s championships, and returning to put on a good display at the Corporate Area champs this year is an indication that they are not far from title challenge in another season. Based on the output from the boys I see them remaining in the top three, but if Jamaica College should slip up or add more to their injury list, Calabar could capitalise and finish second.
