Thieves steal $7 million from Portland wholesale
PORTLAND, Jamaica – Thieves made off with more than $7 million cash during a break-in at a wholesale in Hope Bay, Portland, between Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
In addition to the cash, the culprits also stole 150 cartons/three boxes of assorted cigarettes (Craven A, Matterhorn and Pall Mall), the police said.
Reports are that between 8pm on March 6, 2024, and 6:45 am on March 7, 2024, their thieves entered a bedroom at the rear of the Stress Free Grocery and Meat Wholesale.
They reportedly gained entry by prying away the burglar bars/grille, which secures a glass louvre panes window, and removed four lower window panes.
Police said the operators of the wholesale reported that they securely locked up the building and left on Wednesday night. Upon returning the following morning, they discovered the break-in.
The thieves stole two black safety vaults with cash amounting to more than $7 million. They reportedly escaped via their way of entry, the police said.
