After debut win, J Spieth expected to progress further
Following J Spieth’s debut win on Saturday, March 2, 2024, jockey Tevin Foster believes the Patrick Lynch trainee will improve shortly.
J Spieth, a three-year-old grey colt bred Spieth out of Alice and Trixie, recovered from a poor start to easily defeat rivals in a maiden-conditioned race for native-bred three-year-olds over 7 ½ furlongs.
J Spieth won by 8 ½ lengths in a time of 1:37.4 (24.2 x 48.3 x 1:15.0).
“The performance by J Spieth was pretty good. I mean, this horse is inexperienced, and his first outing was at seven-and-a-half furlongs, and he did well; that speaks a lot about his potential,” Foster told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“He was a bit tired at the end of the race, but just with preparation, and from here on, I look forward to a good future from this horse, as he is a promising one.”
J Spieth’s first outing didn’t start well, as he limped out of the gate. However, the far-striding runner coupled up on the inside rails, surging to the front, leaving the intersection at the 7-furlong pole.
J Spieth led Kaylyn Melody (Javaniel Patterson), Bold Shadow (Christopher Douglas), and The General (Robert Halledeen) down the backstretch.
J Spieth picked up the pace around the half-mile (800m), leaving the trailing pack behind.
Despite drifting out in the deep stretch, J Spieth continued to go until the wire intervened. Kaylyn Melody finished second, followed by
King Piye (Raddesh Roman) in the third slot.
“He was a bit tardy at the start because he was acting up a bit in the starting gates. However, after his first stride, he coupled up well and put his head in front, and that was that,” Foster explained.
“All I had to do was just relax him until I came up to the quarter pole, when I just asked him for a run, and he gave me one. At the top of the lane, he drifted out a little bit, but that was because he was inexperienced. After this race, I expect a much better run.
“He showed his class here. Although it is a maiden race, he showed that he has class because you have other promising three-year-olds in the race, and he dismantled them,” Foster further stated.
