Richard Vernon is MoBay’s youngest ever mayor
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Richard Vernon, councillor for the Montego Bay South Division has been elected mayor of Montego Bay and chairman of the St James Municipal Corporation.
Vernon, who served as the former deputy mayor under his predecessor Leeroy Williams, was elected on a nomination from fellow Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillor, Senator Charles Sinclair and seconded by People’s National Party (PNP) councillor, Michael Troupe.
Sinclair’s nomination was unanimous as councillor for the Montego Bay South East division, Arthur Lynch asked for a suspension of the standing orders under the Representation of the People’s Act (ROPA) which called for non-casting of ballots.
Vernon, 34, becomes the youngest councillor to be elected mayor in the St James Municipal Corporation.
He will be supported by councillor for the Spring Gardens division, Dwight Crawford, who was elected as deputy mayor.
