‘Not yet’
JLP still hasn’t named replacement for Dalrymple-Philibert in Trelawny Southern
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is yet to settle on a replacement for former Member of Parliament (MP) for Trelawny Southern Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert.
In the meantime, the former House Speaker’s stocks have gone up after she guided the party to a clean sweep of the four divisions in the constituency during last week’s local government election.
“We are not there as yet. We just came out of the local government elections and we haven’t had time to look at that specifically as yet,” general secretary of the JLP Dr Horace Chang told the Jamaica Observer when asked for an update on Dalrymple-Philibert’s fate.
“But she is still chairman of the constituency and she carried it very well. She campaigned and won all the seats for us,” Dr Chang stressed.
However, there is speculation on the ground that there may also be interest from businessman Devon McDaniel, who was elected on a JLP ticket in 2002 to become a one-term MP for Trelawny Southern. McDaniel was observed actively supporting JLP candidates in the constituency on election day.
McDaniel was beaten by the PNP’s Sharon Hay-Webster when he ran in St Catherine South Central in the 2007 General Election. His name is among those being floated as potential replacements for Dalrymple-Philibert.
Dalrymple-Philibert stepped aside last year after a ruling by the Integrity Commission’s Director of Corruption Prosecution Keisha Prince-Kameka that she be charged for allegedly running afoul of the Parliament (Integrity of Members) Act, 1973 in her statutory declarations.
Following Dalrymple-Philibert’s resignation, JLP supporters in the constituency staged a boisterous march in Albert Town demanding that she reconsider her decision.
