JLP’s Dawnette Foster retains Cornwall Mountain division in Westmoreland following magisterial recount
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Dawnette Foster has been declared the winner of the Cornwall Mountain division in Westmoreland, following a magisterial recount at the Westmoreland Parish Court, on Thursday.
Foster was represented by King’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson as attorney Senator Charles Sinclair had to attend a swearing-in ceremony in St James on Thursday.
After more than 16 hours of recounting of the ballots, the Electoral Officer of Jamaica (EOJ) and Senior Parish Judge Steve Walters have ruled that Foster won over the People’s National Party’s Abigail Malcolm by 17 votes.
Foster polled 1559 votes to Malcolm’s 1542. The final count last Friday by the EOJ had Foster winning by 27 votes. However, that number has decreased by 10 votes.
Foster is now eligible to be sworn in, having missed the official swearing-in ceremony on Thursday.
Foster was earlier declared the winner after the final count.
The win by Foster still has the JLP in the minority at the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation.
