Island Traffic Authority reports 34 killed in road crashes during February
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) is reporting that 34 people were killed in 28 fatal crashes during the month of February, 2024.
The ITA is also reporting that fatalities decreased by 24 per cent while fatal crashes decreased by 20 per cent when compared with the similar period in 2023.
It said pedestrians accounted for 15 per cent of the road users killed during February, 2024; private motor vehicle drivers accounted for 21 per cent; private motor vehicle passengers accounted for 21 per cent; and motorcyclists accounted for 32 per cent.
The ITA said the group of road users classified as most vulnerable (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion riders) accounted for a combined 47 per cent of the road users killed during the month under review.
It also said that males made up 79 per cent of the fatalities with females accounting for 21 per cent.
Meanwhile, the parish of Trelawny accounted for 18 per cent of the road deaths during February 2024, while Hanover, Westmoreland, St Catherine and St Elizabeth each accounted for 12 per cent.
By way of projections, the ITA said fatalities for 2024 are expected to decrease by two per cent when compared with 2023.
