Storm earns a win for trainer O’Neil Markland
NINE-YEAR-OLD bay gelding Storm, under a well-executed ride from jockey Christopher Mamdeen, came from last position to win the eighth race — a three-year-old and upward Claiming ($1m-$800,000) event on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
Trained by O’Neil Markland, Storm raced at the back of the seven-horse field at the start of the race and watched as Prince Marshall (Raddesh Roman) led the pack ahead of Bern Notice (Tevin Foster) and Iannai Links (Paul Francis).
Storm maintained his gallop down the backstretch until approaching the half mile (800m) when he began to round horses, slipping down to third place coming off the turn for the home bend. Prince Marshall brought the field into the lane with Bern Notice on his outside and
Storm breathing down their necks on the inside rails.
Storm then surged to the front, inside the half-furlong (100m) pole, and went on to win easily by 4¼ lengths ahead of Bern Notice and Prince Marshall, in that order. The winning time was 1:36.1 (23.4 x 47.4 x 1:14.0).
The win by Storm was Markland’s first for the season .
