RACE DAY REVIEW FOR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2024
Eleven races were programmed, with the 1,100-metre opening event being Division One of a Maiden Condition event restricted to three-year-old fillies. Reports of spectacular exercise gallops by the Jason DaCosta-schooled debutant Hit N Run resulted in a starting price of 2-5. However, the filly hardly raised a gallop and was seventh of nine, 16 lengths adrift of the winner. On the other hand, Nerissa’s Angel (10-1), schooled by Alford Brown with Oshane Nugent aboard, led convincingly and scored by one-and-a-half lengths as the first of two wins for the stable.
In race two, the 3-5 favourite Heart Of A Lion, declared by Phillip Elliot, enjoyed a predictable uncontested lead over four rivals to score by three lengths over the 1,100 metres. This gave jockey Samantha Fletcher her second success from 28 mounts this season.
A return to form by Lord Of Ajahlon (6-1) in race three, run at 1,100 metres, confirmed the dual success of the Alford Brown stable and the first of two winners for veteran reinsman Paul Francis. The seven-year-old grey gelding won for the fifth time in 56 appearances, with his previous success in 2022.
For the first of his three wins on the day, early favourite for the 2024 riding title Tevin Foster induced the Howard Jaghai-trained, hard-knocking, late-running five-year-old mare Premier Identity (5-2) to lead inside the last 150 metres and score by two-and-a-half lengths in race four over 1,300 metres. This win was the first of two on the day for the Jaghai outfit.
To confirm his riding double, Francis came home nicely clear on Tigray Express (5-2) to win the 1,200-metre race five by four-and-a-half lengths for owner/trainer Anthony Dixon. Recently licensed conditioner Khary Tucker had his unforgettable experience in saddling his first winner when Xylophonic Steel (14-1) won race six, contested by a field of 12. Ridden by Robert Halledeen in the 1,100-metre Maiden Condition event, restricted to four-year-olds and upwards, the filly, racing from off the pace, sprinted away inside the last 150 metres to score by four-and-a-half lengths.
Infrequently engaged four-kilo claiming jockey Jawani Forbes followed up on a rare success 24 hours earlier by partnering the Philip Feanny-trained debutant Firecracker (9-2) to score in race seven by two-and-a-half lengths in Division Two of the restricted Maiden Condition. Whilst Huntsman (7-5), trained by Gary Griffiths who last won in June 2023 nine races ago when trained by Ian Parsard, returned to form in the 1,200-metre race eight for jockey Christopher Mamdeen for the first of two on the card.
Race nine and feature for Overnight Allowance campaigners was another renewal of the featured 1400-metre Allan E. ‘Billy’ Williams Memorial Trophy. The winner of the 2023 One Thousand Guineas and Mouttet Mile third Mamma Mia (4-5) set a strong pace until overtaken in the last 50 metres by 7-1 shot Atlantic Convoy (CAN) and Further And Beyond (8-1), with both ending in a dead heat. Patrick Lynch’s Atlantic Convoy was Tevin Foster’s second of his three wins, whilst Mamdeen closed his double on the Donovan Hutchinson-conditioned 2021 Horse of the Year Further And Beyond.
Trained by two-time champion Jason DaCosta, progressive American-bred three-year-old colt Funcaandun (3-5) remained undefeated after two starts, with a three-length victory margin over the 1,400 metres of race 10. To close his riding triple, Foster needed the full range of his skill set to score by a neck on Lady Ramdularie (7-1) for the confirmation of the Jaghai stable double.
The Training Feat Award is presented to Howard Jaghai for the presentation of both
Premier Identity and Lady Ramdularie, with the latter combining speed, stamina, and courage to execute the Best Winning Gallop. This performance by Foster on both his winners was good enough for the day’s Jockeyship Award.
