Carey McLeod wins long jump bronze at World Indoor Champs
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Carey McLeod won his first and Jamaica’s second medal in the men’s long jump at the World Athletics Indoor Championships when he took the bronze on Saturday at the Glasgow Arena in Scotland with a season-best best 8.21m.
It was sweet redemption for McLeod, who only missed the silver by two centimetres after he was fourth in the final at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary last year, on countback.
World Championships bronze medallist Tajay Gayle was sixth in with a best mark of 7.89m as Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou retained his title with 8.22m while Italy’s Mattie Furlani won the silver medal with 8.22m.
It was Jamaica’s first men’s indoor long jump medal in 20 years since James Beckford won silver in Budapest in 2004 and McLeod’s first at a major global championship.
McLeod’s medal was the second for Jamaica at the championships after Ackeem Blake won a bronze in the men’s 60m on Friday’s opening day.
