Trevor Gunzell avenges junior college shot put loss
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Former Edwin Allen High athlete Trevor Gunzell of Coffeyville Community College avenged last year’s loss to his former high school teammate Christopher Young to win the men’s shot put at the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) National Championships at the Alachua County Events Center, Gainesville, Florida on Friday.
Gunzell, who finished second last year, threw an indoor personal best and program record of 18.59m in the final round to pass Young and take the title as there were six Jamaican throwers in the top eight.
Young, who has signed a commitment letter to attend the University of Alabama starting in August, led with 18.22m from the second round and had three marks over 18:00m but was passed by Gunzell in the final round.
Gunzell, who had a previous best of 18.51m, and Young, both broke the facility record of 17.65m set earlier this year by former Calabar High thrower Kai Change of the University of Florida.
Yekini Bowen of Iowa Western was third with 17.07m and his teammate Denzs Simmonds fourth with 16.77m, Ricardo Hayles of Barton County was sixth with 16.49m and Shamar Reid of South Plains was eighth with 15.98m.
Machaeda Linton of William Carey defended her women’s long jump title at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor championships at Dakota State, with an NAIA leading 6.03m on Friday.
