Senior citizens domino tournament gets thumbs up
Humbert Davis, the first vice-president of the National Association of Domino Bodies (NADB), says he welcomes the Ministry of Labour and Social Security’s National Council for Senior Citizens Domino Tournament.
He noted its success in getting elderly people involved in the sport.
With dominoes requiring minimal physical exertion, it is universal in its reach and likely to be found in every nook and cranny in urban and rural areas.
The senior citizens tournament was also successful in strengthening linkages with the communities through partnerships. Charity entity Project STAR was also on board, as they provided meals for the senior citizens.
On Thursday, the one-day event took place at the National Council for Senior Citizens, located on West King’s House Road. The competition had 12 teams from various areas competing.
“What we are saying is play, endure, and don’t watch the score. What this means is that if you are one or 75, you don’t watch how old you are; just play your part in life,” Davis told the Jamaica Observer.
“We are focusing on the elders, and so we don’t want them to just lie down in their homes doing nothing. We want them to come out, play some dominoes and have fun, and don’t wait for death to come,” added Davis, who said that the championship trophy is dedicated to his mother, Maudlyn “Mada” Davis.
Drvin Beckford, who hails from the Seaview community, said that he would travel miles for competitions like these.
“It is a good look. I mean, every sport you see is for the younger generations, and so getting the elders to come together and have fun is really good. We too want to play and win something and be proud of ourselves,” the 72-year-old said.
