Pryce, Smith to double at NCAA Indoor
Jamaicans Nickisha Pryce of the University of Arkansas and Ackelia Smith of the University of Texas have qualified in two events for next weekend’s NCAA Indoor track and field championships, it was announced on Wednesday.
The indoor meet is to be held in Boston from March 7-9.
Pryce qualified in the women’s 200m and 400m, while Smith will take part in the long and triple jump events. They are among 41 Jamaican athletes set to represent their colleges and universities in individual events at the three-day event.
The championships organisers said there could be changes “pending medical scratches”, meaning athletes could be withdrawn by their teams depending on their health or fitness.
The top-16 performers in each individual event and top 12 4x400m and distance medley relay teams qualify for the indoor championships.
A number of Jamaicans will go into the championships as leaders in their events: high jumpers Romaine Beckford of the University of Arkansas and Lamara Distin of Texas A&M University; long jumpers Wayne Pinnock of the University of Arkansas and Ackelia Smith of the University of Texas; Brianna Lyston of Louisiana State tops the women’s 60m; while Luke Brown of Kentucky University is out front in the men’s triple jump.
The event with the most Jamaicans is the men’s shot put, which is to feature Roje Stona (Arkansas), Kai Chang (University of Florida), Warren Barrett (Liberty), and Courtney Lawrence (Clemson).
