Nearly 100 lottery scamming players fingered for extradition
MONTEGO BAY, St James— Security Minister Dr Horace Chang has revealed that nearly 100 Jamaicans have been identified for extradition to the United States to answer lottery scamming offences.
The security minister made it abundantly clear that the Jamaican government has no difficulty in facilitating the extradition requests of the American Government.
“I am told that at this point, there are nearly 100 identifiable individuals for extradition. The Government of Jamaica has no problem of cooperating and working to mitigate and hopefully remove this particular scourge of criminal activity from our system because they are a danger and a risk to society,” Chang said.
He was speaking at the Global Services Association of Jamaica GSAJ President’s Breakfast Forum at the Grand-A-View Event Place in Montego Bay, St James on Wednesday.
The event was held under the theme: “Security: Looking at All Angles”.
Chang argued that the cyber criminals are using innovative ways in transferring their ill-gotten gains to Jamaica but local security agencies, in partnership with their international counterparts, are making a headway in their fight to eliminate the scourge.
“The sums of money are increasing. They are using different techniques which means we have to evolve our technology and improve our skills set almost on a daily basis. And it involves police work,” Chang pointed out.
“I understand they now move cash in bulk, they move cash in credit cards, they transport it in different ways and whichever means that can be identified in cyberspace, they will use. They have one in the dark web to hide so it’s a very complex and critical area in law enforcement and I am not myself a “techy’ but I have some very good people, I must ensure the industry, in the system that in fact work there. And we take pride CFCP, MOCA, and a number of individuals who work in other agency government, military intelligence…
“So our partners have given us considerable support in this particular area. They in fact provide good information and we monitor of course the other side because it’s a partnership that is genuinely mutual,” he stated.
