Karting season starts in reverse
The 2024 Jamaican karting season was off to an exciting start on Sunday, February 25, at the Palisadoes International Raceway, Kingston.
Normally reserved for the middle of the year, the circuit was run in reverse, adding some extra challenge and excitement this change in race format always brings.
All karters came fresh and ready to make their run for the sport’s top honour, the Abe Ziadie Trophy.
Lucas Lee dominated the entry-level Comer 50 class. From start to finish his name topped the leaderboard over Sebastian Steele and Adrian Choi. Lee ended the season-opener with 41.5 points. In Rotax Mincromax, Dylan Smith also put in a dominant performance collecting 44 points to the 31 of class rivals Benjamin Greene, and 28 of Liam Hadid.
One thing 2024 proved is that current karting champion Brandon Shor is going to have a fight on his hands with David Brown and Kai Beecher. All three shared a race victory each, but it was Brown who took home the most points for the day, with 32. A point behind was Shor tied with Beecher. Luke Spencer was the driver of the day in the Rotax Junior class, having nearly doubled his points haul over Alex Sharma, at 42 to 28. Justin Donaldson closed off the top three a point behind.
The final class for the day, Rotax Senior, continued to ratchet up the rivalries. The trio of Edward Upstone, Zachary Lee, and Zander Williams went home with a race victory a piece, with Upstone leading the pack with 35.5 points. Lee sat in second with 30.5 and Williams in third with 29.5.
Karting is scheduled to continue on Sunday, March 24.
