JLP flips Mount Industry to sweep divisions in St Catherine NE
The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has won all three divisions in the St Catherine North Eastern constituency, which is held by the party’s Kerensia Morrison.
Following the completion of the official count on Wednesday, the Guys Hill Division was declared for the JLP’s Joseph Johnson who polled 1,846 votes to defeat the People’s National Party (PNP) representative Winston Chambers who grabbed 968.
Chambers is a former JLP councillor who switched allegiance to the PNP.
Independent candidate, Leroy Dunn, who is also a former JLP councilor, mustered 155 votes.
In the Troja Division, the JLP’s Robert Grandison with 1,380 votes, beat the PNP’s veteran councillor William Cytall, who registered 1,161.
The JLP had control of both the Troja and Guys Hill divisions going into Monday’s local government elections. However, the party managed to flip the Mount Industry Division which was previously held by the PNP.
In that division, the JLP’s Correl Davis, with 1,640 votes, overcame the PNP’s Roogae Kirley who finished with 1,377 votes.
St Catherine North Eastern is traditionally considered a battle ground seat in general elections.
