WATCH: Former minister Omar Davies says local government election more than winning or losing
ST ANDREW, Jamaica— Former Government minister Dr Omar Davies said Monday’s local government election is more complicated than winning or losing, when asked his opinion on the People’s National Party’s chances of being named victors.
He told reporters at a polling station at Mona High School in St Andrew where he went to cast his vote, that this election process was more of a referendum based on the signals which will be sent when a winner is named.
“It is more complicated because this one has a lot of signals to be sent…. I think it is more like a referendum than a local government [election] so there are lots of factors that have to be taken into consideration but the response has been good. All you can do is keep it clean, work hard and hope for the best,” Dr Davies said.
Davis, who is also a former member of Parliament for St Andrew South, added that this election is especially important as it has been such a long time since the exercise has been completed in Jamaica.
“It has been such a long time since we have had an election so this is very important to see. The turnout (is important) because if people don’t get a chance to exercise the franchise you probably start to wonder ‘does it matter?’ so it is good that it is happening for that reason,” he concluded.
