Slow start to voting at the National Arena
ST ANDREW, Jamaica— Voters have been slowly trickling into the National Arena in St Andrew to mark their ‘X’ on the ballot in Monday’s local government election.
The slow turnout has done little to discourage members of the People’s National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) who are confident that their respective supporters will soon turn out in their numbers.
Supporters of the PNP appear to form the majority of voters out early at the National Arena.
“Delay is danger and we can’t take no chance with this election. This local government election come in like a general election so we have to be on our double. That’s why I am here so early,” PNP supporter Blossom Edwards, told Observer Online.
“Let’s hope them don’t put on an orange shirt and don’t vote orange. Everybody in the line is orange. So far, we on top of it and we going to stay on top of it,” she added.
JLP supporters, though fewer in numbers remain confident.
“Our people, they take time trickle in. They will come in. Most of them are at work and they haven’t gotten the time off as yet. So they will soon be here,” said JLP supporter Lorna Barnett.
The National Arena is within the Trafalgar Division where PNP candidate Jesse Clarke and JLP candidate Kari Douglas are battling for the seat.
