Mamdeen shines on rainy Caymanas outing
Despite a superb three-timer from title-chasing jockey Tevin Foster, it was former champion jockey Christopher Mamdeen who stole the show on Sunday’s 11-race card by winning his 200th career race atop the Gary Griffiths-conditioned Huntsman in the eighth race.
The race was a Restricted Allowance IV contest for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of three) and imported four-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of two) over six furlongs (1,200m).
Mamdeen, who started the day with 199 winners, brought Huntsman from behind to win the race by 2 ½ lengths ahead of Joy Is Gold (Foster) in a time of 1:14.4.
“It is always a good feeling to win a race, and so winning 200 races doesn’t really matter that much, but it is a good achievement,” Mamdeen said. “I still have a long way to go, and so these 200 winners are just a start.”
Mamdeen then went on to register win number 201 in the very next race when he, aboard Further and Beyond, dead-heated for first place with Atlantic Convoy, ridden by Foster, in the $1.25-million Allan E “Billy” Williams Memorial Cup feature over seven furlongs (1,400m).
Further and Beyond is trained by Donovan Hutchinson. The Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and older ended in a time of 1:26.4 (23.3 x 46.3).
In addition to winning aboard Atlantic Convoy for trainer Patrick Lynch, Foster was also successful aboard
Premier Identity in the fourth race and Lady Ramdularie in the 11th and final event. Both Premier Identity and Lady Ramdularie are trained by Howard Jaghai.
Also saddling two winners was trainer Alford Brown. Brown won with Nerissa’s Angel (Oshane Nugent) in the opening event and Lord of Ajahlon (Paul Francis) in the day’s third race.
Racing continues on Saturday.
