JLP’s Garfield James expecting sweep in Westmoreland
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — There is a steady flow of voting at the Moreland Hill Primary School polling station where turncoat candidate for the Sheffield Division, Garfield James cast his vote shortly after 9:00 am.
James said he is confident he will win the division again but this time on the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) ticket.
All eyes are on the Sheffield and Little London divisions as the councillors formerly won on a People’s National Party (PNP) ticket.
James told Observer Online on Monday that he is confident of winning the coveted seat.
“Confidence is based on the data and facts; and if you look around carefully you’re seeing where the significant turnout is in relation to the Jamaica Labour Party. I am confident that I will be victorious and by extension the Jamaica Labour Party when the poll closes this afternoon,” he said.
“I’m an educator and part of my thing is punctuality. Early voting is always the best way to go,” James said of his early show at the polling station.
The number of voters since the poll opened at 8:00 am is not yet clear but it is understood that it has been steady since the polling division opened.
Observer Online saw scores of green-clad voters walking in, making the JLP’s ‘shower’ sign.
The PNP’s Derrick McKenzie will be going up against James.
In the 2016 local government election, James, the sitting principal of the Little London High School in the parish, racked up 1,058 votes. His opponent Millicent Whitelocke secured 539 votes.
