I am able: A conversation with female jockey Abigail Able
MEET Abigail Able, a female jockey with a passion for the racetrack like no other. The 27-year-old, who hails from Caymanas Gardens, Portmore, sat with us to share her captivating journey in the world of horse racing, where every stride tells a story of determination and grit.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in horse racing, and how did you overcome challenges as a female jockey in a male-dominated sport?
A: Well, it all started in a bit of a funny way. My sister used to work at the pool, and I’d often hang around there with her. One day, I plucked up the courage to ask a trainer if I could tag along with one of his horses. To my surprise, he said yes. We headed to the track, but things got a bit wild when the horse decided to take off! Despite the chaos, I found myself loving every moment. That’s when I knew horse racing was where I belonged.
As for being a woman in this sport, it’s definitely tough. I have to work twice as hard to prove myself, but I’m determined to show that women can excel here too. As a testament to this, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve just been appointed as an ambassador for Bearings & Accessories’ Q8Oils. It’s an exciting opportunity that adds a new dimension to my journey in horse racing. Now I’m not just racing for myself; I’m representing a brand that values determination and excellence, and I couldn’t be more motivated.
Q: What are some of the most memorable moments or races in your career so far, and how have they shaped you?
A: Oh, there have been so many memorable races! Every single moment in horse racing is like a precious memory to me. From the very first time I set foot on the track to every exhilarating win, it’s all so unforgettable. Racing fills me with so much joy, whether I’m crossing that finish line first or learning from a tough race. I hold onto each one dearly, like they happened just yesterday. They’re all pieces of my journey, and they’ll stick with me forever.
Q: What unique perspectives or challenges do you bring to the track as a female jockey, and how do you navigate them?
A: Physically, getting ready for a race is like preparing for a big event. Mentally, it’s about staying focused and positive. I always remind myself of my goals and say a little prayer before each race to keep me centred. As a woman in horse racing, I bring a different energy to the track. Now, as an ambassador, I want to inspire other women to chase their dreams fearlessly and show the world that gender is no barrier to success.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring female jockeys facing similar obstacles in pursuing their dreams?
A: Never give up! It’s tough out there, but with determination and hard work you can overcome any challenge. Keep pushing forward, and remember, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. And remember, you’re not just racing for yourself — you’re racing for every girl who dreams of being in your boots.
Q: What do you envision for the future of women in horse racing, and how do you see yourself shaping that future?
A: I see a future where women are celebrated and respected in horse racing just as much as men. As an ambassador for Q8Oils and a jockey, I’ll continue to inspire and empower other women to chase their dreams in this sport. Together, we can change the game, one race at a time.
