‘MAKE IT COUNT’
Warren Blake challenges World Indoors squad to give good account of selves
Three former individual medallists have been included in the 20-member team named by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) for the World Athletics Indoor Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 1 to 3.
Danniel Thomas-Dodd, silver medallist in Birmingham in 2018, and Stephenie Ann McPherson, and Kimberly Williams who both won bronze medals at the most recent staging two years ago in Belgrade, Serbia, were named on the list that was released on Friday.
JAAA former president Dr Warren Blake will manage the team in the United Kingdom. He told the
Jamaica Observer that while there are a number of “youngsters” in the team, he expects them “to give a good account of themselves”.
He said the selectors were limited to “athletes who made themselves available”, as a number of top athletes were not included.
“I think they still did a good job to select the best and strongest team we have,” he added.
McPherson, who won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m in 2022, was named in the 4x400m relay pool which will hope to defend their gold medal. Williams also won a bronze medal in the women’s triple jump in 2022.
Jamaica won three medals, a gold and two bronze, and finished 12th on the medals tables in Belgrade, and Junelle Bromfield, who led off the gold medal winning team then, was also named in the relay pool along with Stacey Ann Williams and Charokee Young, who will contest the women’s 400m.
Thomas-Dodd, the national record holder indoor and outdoor, will hope for another medal, while the in-form Shashalee Forbes and Briana Williams will contest the women’s 60m.
Natoya Goule, who just missed a medal in the women’s 800m two years ago, will hope to make amends while Megan Tapper, the Olympic Games bronze medallist in the 100m hurdles, will make her first appearance at the World Indoor Championships.
Jamaica will be well-represented in the men’s long jump with Carey McLeod and Tajay Gayle, while Tyler Mason and Damion Thomas are down for the men’s 60m hurdles and Rajindra Campbell will make his first appearance when he contests the men’s shot put.
