Daniel Cope places second in ACC weight throw
KINGSTON, Jamaica— Jamaica’s Daniel Cope of Clemson University finished second in the men’s weight throw on Thursday’s first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Indoor Championships at Boston University in Boston with a best of 21.71m.
Cope, the former Petersfield High and Jamaican junior representative, improved on his third place finish from last year.
He went into the competition as the number one ranked in the event in the ACC with a personal best, Clemson record and Jamaican national record 22.75m, eight best in the NCAA.
Duke University’s Christian Johnson took the title with 21.73m, while Jacob Lemmon of the University of Virginia was third with 21.57m
His teammate Marie Forbes, finished fourth in the women’s final with a best of 20.50m after starting the competition with two foul throws before throwing 20.01m to stay in the competition.
At the Coastal Athletics Conference (CAA) Indoor Championships that is being held at the Nike Track and field Center at the Armory in New York, Hope Belvit of Northeastern University, younger sister of national record holder Erica, was fourth in the women’s weight throw with 17.81m.
Meanwhile, at the ACC championships, D’Andre Anderson- 20.92 seconds and Tahj Hamm- 21.29 seconds, both of Clemson, ran personal best times to advance to the finals of the men’s 200m.
Shenese Walker of Florida State University, equalled her personal best 23.54 seconds, third best in the women’s 200m prelims and advanced to the final along with Clemson’s Ockera Myrie who ran 23.74 seconds.
Shemar Chambers of North Carolina A&T led the men’s 400m qualifying at the CAA championships with a season best 47.12 seconds.
