Trusting the process
Williams confident in Frater’s ability to lead her to individual Olympic spot on national team
Olympic 4x100m relay silver medallist Briana Williams expressed strong faith and confidence in the training methodology of Michael Frater, the head coach of Dynamics track club, to secure an individual spot on Jamaica’s team for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris.
Williams, who won the sprint double at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, in 2018, made a switch last September from Titans International track club, where she was jointly coached by Gregory Little and Frater, to Dynamics track club, formed by the latter.
The 21-year-old secured a spot on Jamaica’s team for the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, as a relay runner, finishing fourth in the final at the National Championships.
Despite not breaking the sub-11 barrier in 2023, with her season’s best being 11.01, compared to personal best times of 10.97 and 10.94 in 2021 and 2022, respectively, Williams told the
Jamaica Observer that her primary focus this season is to represent the country in the 100 and 200 metres at the upcoming Olympic Games. Williams said that she believes that the training under Frater’s guidance will help her achieve these goals.
“The preparation is all about Paris this year, and that is the goal and that is the aim,” said Williams. “I am just trusting him [Michael Frater] and trusting the process, and it has been going very well,” she added.
Williams, who has been running a lot of the 60m this season, explained that she is using the shorter distance to help her to prepare for the National Senior Championships, which will be held at the end of June.
“I am really focusing on trials, and that is what I am preparing for, and I am just using these [60m] to help prepare for my 100 metres and 200 metres,” she asserted. “I am remaining focused and determined, following my coach’s lead, training hard, and continuing to let the results speak for themselves,” Williams added.
With a season’s best time of 7.11 in the 60m and a personal best effort of 7.04 in the event, Williams has been running several 60m races this season to prepare for the World Indoors Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 1-3.
“These 60 metres are just to get ready and prepared for the World Indoors. The 60m is a technical race and you need to get a lot of meets under your belt to prepare for the 60 metres, you can’t mess up because it is a quick race and it ends quickly,” Williams stated.
