No plan to increase market fees – McKenzie
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Desmond McKenzie, has denied any intention by the government to raise market fees.
In a release on Tuesday, McKenzie dubbed rumours of an increase as “a desperate ploy by a party struggling to connect positively with voters” and says the Government “remains steadfast on advancing Jamaica, its populace, and communities.”
McKenzie further emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to modernising and enhancing markets. It is against that background that he highlighted the procurement of 50 new garbage trucks, which he says is poised to significantly bolster garbage collection across markets, communities, and public areas.
“When we assumed office in 2016, the NSWA operated with about 18 garbage trucks. Today, under our administration, that number has surged to over 70, with an additional 50 slated to arrive in Jamaica in a few months,” he said.
