Jamaicans set records at indoor conference champs
Jamaicans Kimeone McLeod of Florida A&M University, Travis Robinson and Dominique Clarke of the University of Albany, and Zayne Palomino of Southern Miss University all set championships records at their respective NCAA Indoor track and field conference championships that ended on Tuesday.
A number of indoor conferences started over the weekend, setting the pace for the major championships set to start on Thursday before the NCAA Division 1 and 2 championships set to be held March 8-9.
At the South-West Athletics Conference (SWAC) indoor championships, held at the Birmingham Crossplex, McLeod, the former St Jago High runner, won the women’s 60m hurdles title, running 8.41 seconds to equal the record set by Safiya John in 2022.
Robinson, the former Jamaica College thrower, retained his men’s shot put title after throwing a personal best 18.53m at the America East Conference Championships, breaking his own championship record of 16.37m set last year. He also broke the conference record of 17.97m set by Brice Paey of New Hampshire in 2012.
Dominique Clarke, also of Albany, won her third straight women’s 60m title, running a championship record 7.41 seconds, beating the 7.45 seconds she set last year. Her teammates, Shenequa Vassell and Shantae Pryce, were second and fourth, respectively, in 7.63 seconds and 7.66 seconds.
Palomino, who was third at the Sun Belt Indoors, set a new personal best 2.20m to win the men’s high jump, beating his previous best of 2.18m set earlier this season.
At the SWAC event, Kriss-Ann Plummer of Arkansas- Pine Bluff University was second in the 1000m final, running a personal best 5:12.26, with her teammate Abigail Pinnock placing third in 5:19.45.
Plummer was also third in the women’s 800m, running another personal best 2:13.10 with Pinnock placing seventh in 2:23.87.
Daniel Bayeshea of Alabama State was fourth in the men’s weight throw with 15.47m.
Albany’s Clarke was also second in the women’s 200m at the America East championships, running 23.96 seconds; Vassell was sixth in 24.94 seconds and Pryce seventh in 24.96 seconds.
Former Meadowbrook High ISSA Champs finalist Shakur Williams, also of Albany, won the men’s 60m/200m double, running 6.67 seconds for the shorter sprint and won the 200m in 21.35 seconds.
Shania Scott was fourth in the women’s shot put with 14.01m.
At the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference (MEAC) championships held at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex, Terine Lambert of Morgan State University retained her women’s shot put title with 13.81m, while her teammate Johnelle Johnson placed second with a season best 13.33m.
Johnson was third in the weight throw with 17.27m and Lambert seventh with 15.01m, while Zackery Dillon was second in the men’s shot put with 15.77m and Omari McKenzie fifth in the men’s triple jump with a personal best 14.76m.
Kimone Campbell of the University of Louisiana-Monroe was second in the women’s 800m with a personal best 2:10.19, while Javed Jones of the University of Louisiana was fourth in the men’s 400m in 48.11 seconds.
