Clarke and Chance double winners at JUCO Regionals
Jamaica’s Kay-Lagay Clarke of Barton Community College and Calleisha Chance of Iowa Western Community College were double winners at their respective National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) Regional indoor championships last weekend.
Former St Jago High standout Clarke won the women’s triple jump and 60m hurdles at the Region VI Indoor championships held at the Robert W plaster Center in Pittsburg, Kansas while Chance, the former Vere Technical athlete, won the women’s long and high jumps at the Region 11 championships held at Buena Vista University, Storm Lake, Iowa.
Clarke won the triple jump with 12.07m, beating Shackala Henry of Cloud Community College (11.34m), and then won the sprint hurdles in 8.70 seconds, ahead of Chenessa Davis of Cloud who ran 8.92 seconds. Clarke was also fifth in the women’s long jump with 5.62m.
Chance, who also attended Highland Community College, jumped 5.87m to win the women’s long jump and cleared 1.65m in the high jump.
At the Region VI event, former Edwin Allen High thrower Trevor Gunzel of Coffeyville Community College won the men’s shot put with 18.32m, beating his high school teammate Christopher Young of Barton Community College (17.92m) in a repeat of last year’s results. Ricardo Hayles, also of Barton, was fifth with 16.37m.
Young was also fourth in the men’s weight throw with 16.87m.
Cordaelia Williams of Cloud Community College won the Women’s Indoor Pentathlon with 2,957 points, with her teammate Shakala Henry placing fifth with 2,705 points.
Corlando Chambers of Barton won the men’s 600m in 1:20.63 while Shone Walters was fifth in the women’s race with 1:39.27.
Cloud Community College’s Henry was third in the women’s high jump with 1.62m and her team mate Williams was fifth with 1.52m.
At the Region 11 Indoors, Kevroy Venson of Indian Hills Community College won the men’s 1,000m in 2:28.16.
Kaylia Kelly of Iowa Western won the women’s 200m in 24.40 seconds and Tanique Taylor of Iowa Western won the women’s 60m hurdles in 8.73 seconds.
Denzs Simmons of Iowa Western won the men’s shot put with 17.41m ahead of Yekini Bowen who threw 17.31m. He was also second in the men’s weight throw with 16.91m.
