Senator touts JLP Local Gov’t achievements, urges supporters to cast ballot early Monday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Government Senator Abka Fitz-Henley says he’s hopeful that the body of work put in by Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie and Jamaica Labour Party representatives across the country will augur well for the governing party when Jamaicans vote in Municipal Corporation elections on Monday.
Fitz-Henley also called on electors to go out early on Local Government Election Day, to ensure the JLP prevails in the majority of the Corporations.
The Government Senator made the comments while he addressed Labourites during a tour on the weekend of the Mona, Harbour View and Dallas Divisions in East Rural St Andrew with Member of Parliament Juliet Holness and Attorney-at-law Christian Tavares-Finson.
During the tour, they urged support for candidates Gary Brown, Wayde Brown, and Mario Harley, who are contesting the Mona, Harbour View and Dallas Divisions on behalf of the JLP.
“We have a Minister who has been intentional about ensuring that block, concrete and steel houses are built for those who are facing a hard time. In almost every parish, the Government has built houses for the indigent. We have built centres to house the homeless. We have made moves to increase the roll-out of street lights across the country and there is more work to be done but this Government has also invested in the purchase of 100 garbage trucks to better service the waste disposal needs of residents. I am confident that we have put in the work at the local government level for the people to give us their support”, Fitz-Henley told Labourites in the Dallas Division.
The Government Senator also alluded to Water Shops established across various sections of the island as part of “creative strategies” implemented at the Municipal Corporation level to respond to challenges facing people. He noted that Manchester, Clarendon, St. Ann, Portland and St Elizabeth are among the parishes which have benefited.
Fitz-Henley argued that the Holness administration has fixed the economy and set the stage for more major development at the local government level.
“I hear PNP say during the recent two debates that they going to allocate $20 billio to Local Government. Well, they must have copied that from the budget Nigel Clarke tabled last week because that is the exact amount we have allocated. Part of the reason it’s crucial the Government prevails in the majority of Municipal Corporations is that we have to ensure that the Central Government is not hindered at the local government level in the implementation of projects, because we have set the stage to get so much more done. Ensuring a good and functional implementation synergy between central and local government is important”, Fitz-Henley commented as he urged Jamaicans to go out early and vote for the governing party on Monday.
