Sharon Marley pleased with response to Marley biopic
Grammy winning singer Sharon Marley, the eldest daughter of the late reggae icon Bob Marley, says she is pleased with the response from moviegoers to the Bob Marley: One Love biopic, which opened on February 14.
The film earned some $14 million in its first day, and up to February 18, had pulled in more than $45.6 million in North America, finishing in first place at the US Box Office.
In an interview with Observer Online backstage at Saturday night’s staging of the 4th annual Afro Carib Festival in Florida which was hosted by Miramar’s Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis, Marley said she was happy that people still have a love for her late father.
“We don’t even start to think about box office success yet. What I’m glad to hear is that a lot of people are going to see the movie, and a lot of people are still in love with Bob Marley. And at the same time, a lot of people are still preaching one love. That’s what I’m happy about,” said Marley.
Marley, who performed her new single Steppah at the Afro Carib Festival, (the song features legendary old school deejay Big Youth) said the Bob Marley biopic was much larger than expected.
“The project is bigger than us at this point, the project is for the world and the actors (Lashana Lynch and Kingsley Ben-Adir) they went to the farthest extent to fulfill that mission of portraying my parents. I think they did a great job, considering nobody can portray my parents. They are actors and they did great,” Marley said.
Sharon was still a teenager when Bob died. She remembers her fondest memory of the man who had a positive impact on her life.
“Racing with all of us and making sure that he came first. That’s my fondest memory of him,” she shared.
Marley was a member of the Grammy winning and platinum selling family group Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers. She was asked if there will be a reunion of the group anytime soon.
“A reunion? Me too, I’d love that to happen. But when Jah seh so,” she responded.
Currently working on her debut album which is still untitled, Marley said the project will be released this year. Grub Cooper, Mikey Bennettt and Leroy Romans are some of the producers who will contribute to the project.
The Afro Carib Festival which took place at the Miramar Regional Park’s Amphitheatre in Miramar, Florida, saw high-powered performances from the likes of Afrobeats star Fireboy DML, Tony Rebel, Nadine Sutherland, Kabaka Pyramid and Kenny Haitian.
