Mentorship designed to inspire
IT is not usual for a 12-year-old to be uncertain of a chosen career path. However, for Mark Michael Gardner, a grade seven student at Manning’s School, engaging in a transformative mentorship experience at Charela Inn, a boutique hotel in Negril, Westmoreland, would prove to be the perfect opportunity that would help him to narrow his career option and to create a opportunity for self-discovery.
As a recipient of the hotel’s Sylvie Grizzle Scholarship, the youngster has shown an early passion for pursuing a career in hotel operations, and the mentorship he received last summer further solidified his aspirations.
Mark Michael eagerly accepted an offer from hotelier Daniel Grizzle, managing director of Charela Inn, to explore and gain exposure to the world of hospitality. “The first time I met Mark Michael, I recognised an immediate spark. At such a young age, he was able to communicate his dream of becoming successful. It was then that I invited him to the resort to receive mentorship that would help to inspire and nurture that spark I saw in him,” Grizzle said.
With the permission of his supportive parents, Mark Michael was delighted by the opportunity to spend three weeks of his summer holiday being mentored and gaining inspiration from the dedicated employees at the hotel.
“I really never thought of doing this, as I am only 12 years old,” admitted the young visionary. “But I always talk to my mother about growing up and what my future would look like when I get older. The experience opened my eyes to many possibilities.”
Mark Michael’s journey to the hotel each morning was filled with excitement as he eagerly anticipated the new experiences that awaited him. Upon arrival, he was warmly greeted by Grizzle, who introduced him to the staff from the various departments. The family-like culture at the resort created a sense of ease and calmness as Mark Michael navigated his way in an unfamiliar work environment that would ultimately be his first mentorship playground.
The staff soon embraced him as they recognised his level of discipline, politeness and willingness to learn. During his mentorship, Mark Michael was exposed to key areas of the hotel operations, including watersports, guest services and purchasing. Reflecting on his favourite experience, he delightfully shared how he spent time in the watersports department where he learnt the importance of keeping guests safe. Greeting and interacting with guests was an exciting activity to do. However, the purchasing and stores department provided him with much insight on how the hotel operates behind the scenes.
“I learnt a lot from the purchasing department. It was interesting as I learnt about ordering supplies for the hotel and the processes involved. It was an experience I will never forget,” the lad said.
Proud mom Angelecia Huggart-Gardner expressed her pride in her son’s accomplishments, and emphasised the importance of holistic development. “Everything in life counts, and his experience at this early stage will help to mold him into a well-rounded young man,” expressed Gardner. She admitted to having frequent conversations about his dreams and aspirations.
Even at his young age, Gardner also admitted to how academically focused Mark Michael is. As a Christian and active member of his school’s chess club, the passionate youngster also finds time to experience his youthfulness through his playful interaction with friends.
The mentorship received at Charela Inn had a lasting impact on Mark Michael. Inspired by his transformative experience, he encourages his fellow peers to seek guidance on their career options.
“If you are unsure about a career choice, ask relatives or a worker to visit their workplace,” he encouraged.
Looking ahead, Mark Michael is eager to receive continued mentorship as he grows older and continues to explore a potential career in the hotel industry.
