Battle royale expected at COCAA/GraceKennedy Western Champs
THE scene is set for what could be a compelling final day of the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA)/GraceKennedy Western Athletics Championships at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz, at 9 am on Saturday.
The race for overall honours could come right down to the relays at the end of the day, with Munro College and defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) leading the respective boys’ and girls’ races after Thursday’s first day at Cornwall College.
Former champions Munro College lead the men’s points tables with 116 points after 16 finals on Thursday, followed by Cornwall College with 101, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS) on 93, William Knibb Memorial 89.5, and Herbert Morrison Technical on 39 rounding out the top five.
Defending champions STETHS leads the women’s section with 108 points from 13 finals, followed by Mt Alvernia High on 67 points, Petersfield High 48, William Knibb Memorial with 43, and Black River High on 30.
Among the many matchups lined up for the final day will be the Class One Boys’ 100m wherein defending champion DeAndre Daley, who missed the final of the 200m on Thursday, will start favourite after running 10.82 seconds (1.8m/s) to win his first-round heat.
STETHS’s Ricoy Hunter, who led the first round with a wind-aided 10.65 seconds (4.9m/s); his teammate Tramaine Todd; Romario Hines of Munro College who won the 200m ahead of Cornwall College’s Zachary Cox; will all be eyeing the medal as well.
Muschett High’s 200m champion Johan-Ramaldo Smythe, who was fourth in the 100m last year, looks set to complete the double after running a wind-aided 10.83 seconds (3.1m/s) in the first round, bettered only by Cornwall College’s Thomas Daley’s 10.80 seconds (2.1m/s), while Class Three Boys’ gold medallist in the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships Tavaine Stewart will also be in the mix.
Despite former Petersfield High’s Alexis James and Mt Alvernia High’s Carleta Bernard having graduated from high school, the Class One Girls’ 100m could be even more competitive today.
Last year’s Class Two champion Lavanya Williams of William Knibb Memorial has stepped up a class but will have to battle Habiba Harris of STETHS who will also be seeking the 100m hurdles gold medal ahead of Shanise Ellis, also of STETHS, and Petersfield High’s Fadine Abbott, who was second in the 200m on Thursday.
Lacovia High’s Sabrina Dockery, who retained her Class Two 200m title on Thursday, leads after the first round of the 100m, running a wind-aided 11.61 seconds, and will face the STETHS pair of Rihanna Allen and Chrystal Salmon.
In the field events, Munro College’s Javontae Smith, who smashed the Class Two Boys’ shot put record on Thursday with a world Under-18-leading 18.21m effort, will be the red-hot favourite to add the discus title, coming into the meet with a season and personal 53.28m, just shy of the meet record 53.81m set 10 years ago in 2014.
