Inflation touches one-year high
Consumer prices dipped in the month of January for the first time in 10 months as the Government’s decision to reduce adult fares for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company took effect and some agricultural prices eased off Christmas highs. The dip in prices in January was, however, not enough to offset inflationary impulses impacting the country over the last 12
months.
Statistical Institute of Jamaica (Statin) said Thursday that prices in the month of January cooled by 0.1 per cent after rising every month since April.
Still, the more keenly watched 12-month gauge for inflation rose 7.4 per cent, the highest since February last year. It was the third-straight month of annual price changes.
Over the last year, the forces driving inflation have been the cost of food, rent and transport.
