Five on drug charges to face case management hearing
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A plea and case management hearing has been set in the case against five individuals arrested last July after a police operation in this parish yielded a quantity of cocaine and more than $500,000 in cash.
Barrington Kerr, 52; Kerry-Ann Kerr, 45; and Juanecia Kerr, 24, all of Ironshore, Montego Bay, St James, are charged with conspiracy, possession, dealing in, and attempting to export cocaine, and using premises to manufacture and distribute cocaine.
Kayodia Dias, 26, of Cash Hill, Hanover, and Percival Parkins of Cascade district, also in Hanover, have also been charged.
Attorneys-at-law Martyn Thomas and Michael Hemmings represent the defendants.
When the matter came before the St James Parish Court on Thursday, the court was informed that the case file was complete.
However, the prosecutor informed the court that the Crown could proceed without the call data they had expected because they would not be relying on it.
The court was also told that all relevant documents will be copied and served on the defence lawyers on the next court date, when a trial date would be set.
Presiding Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley subsequently set the matter for plea and case management hearing for March 12, before extending the defendants’ bails.
An intelligence-led operation was carried out at the Kerrs’ Ironshore apartment on July 9 and 10, where all defendants were seen. Barrington Kerr was issued a warrant under the Dangerous Drugs Act, and the residence was thoroughly searched. During a search of the couple’s bedroom, investigators allegedly discovered a bag containing nine Maggie coconut milk and Lasco packets, all of which contained cocaine.
The allegations are that a further search yielded $570,000, and several empty Maggie coconut milk powder packages and Ziploc bags were found during a search of a motor vehicle on the premises. A field test on the empty packages reportedly revealed the presence of cocaine.
Barrington Kerr’s other residence in Smithfield District, Cascade, Hanover, was also searched, and the allegations are that $109,050 was discovered and seized.
The five accused were subsequently arrested and charged.
