JamWorld to become Jamaica’s first 24-hour entertainment complex – GG
The JamWorld Entertainment Complex in Portmore, St Catherine, which is known for its annual staging of Sting, the so-called ‘greatest one-night reggae show’, is to be designated Jamaica’s first 24-hour entertainment zone.
The move is aimed at addressing the country’s need for designated entertainment areas.
The announcement was made Thursday at Gordon House by Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, as he delivered the 2024 Throne Speech outlining the Government’s plans for the upcoming legislative year.
Sir Patrick noted that the facility is being renovated ahead of its designation, and commented that “our excellence in entertainment outweighs our size”.
Meanwhile, Sir Patrick also noted that the nomination of the “Archaeological Landscape of 17th Century Port Royal” for inscription to the UNESCO World Heritage List “puts us again on the global stage”.
“The ‘Port Royal Sunken City’ is the only site in the Western Hemisphere and one of three in the world that fall into the category of ‘Catastrophic Sites’,” said the governor-general.
And, he said amendments will be made to the Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act to respond to changing norms in heritage protection and management, consistent with international trends and best practices.
