Thursday Food explores five of this year’s best blush wines from Descorchados 2024 Argentina rankings.
Altocedro Año Cero Barrel Collection Merlot Rosé, a 94-point wine that topped the rankings in a tie for best rosé, is produced by winemaker Karim Mussi under the Altocedro label. This 100 per cent merlot wine, made in La Consulta Uco Valley, is a bright pink colour with delicate fruity aromatics that exhibit notes of cherries and strawberries. In the mouth, nutmeg and spices combine for an intense flavour that is creamy, frank and enveloping. The wine flows with medium body and medium freshness, with a well-marked acidity in delicate balance without sacrificing its flavour.
Rutini Colección Rosé de Malbec, a 100 per cent varietal by Rutini Wines, tied for top of the rankings with a score of 94 points. This wine, produced from vineyards in Gualtallary, Uco Valley exhibits a pink, onion-skin colour with copper nuances which herald spring. Its aromas offer pleasant floral notes, subtle red fruits and some nuts such as almond and walnut, with coconut and vanilla appearing discreetly due to the reddish contribution. Complex and distinguished, in the mouth it is fresh having great volume that gives it a long finish.
Viña Las Perdices Rosé de Malbec Classique, a 92-point rosé, is made by Viña Las Perdices in the Agrelo area of Lujan de Cuyo from 100 per cent Malbec grapes. The wine, which is a very attractive and pink colour, expresses notes of cherry, sour cherry and strawberry. On the palate, it has a pleasant entry as well as good volume which causes a certain citrus sensation due to its balanced acidity, making it ideal as an aperitif to accompany various appetisers.
Alfil Claret Torrontés, Bonarda, Criolla Chica, which earned a 93-point score in the rankings, is produced by Los Dragones in the Paraje Hilario area of Valle de Calingasta, San Juan. The rosé has an intense blush colour, offering a perfume of flowers and red fruits. Made with 95 per cent Torrontés, 4 per cent Bonarda, 1 per cent Criolla chica co-fermented, it is light on the palate but with sharp tannins and refreshing acidity.
Aether Nature Rosé Brut Nature, another 93-point rosé, is made using the traditional Champenoise method by Barroco Wines from vineyards in Los Chacayes, Uco Valley. This espumante, the only one featured today, comprises 90 per cent Pinot Noir and 10 per cent Chardonnay, is pink with copper reflections of good intensity, and has very small, persistent bubbles. On the nose it expresses notes of toasted bread with very good sensations of raspberries and caramelised cherries. In the mouth, the bubbles are small with a good creamy formation having acidity that is in good balance. It repeats olfactory notes and a sensation of almond cream appears that makes it complex and forceful, with an almost high volume that ends in a long persistent finish.
