JTA pledges to reshape education landscape as it marks 60th anniversary
AHEAD of its 60th anniversary celebrations, president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, Leighton Johnson says the union is spearheading activities to reinforce its significance in modern society, promising to usher in a transformative era of education.
This year the JTA will mark its milestone under the theme, ‘Preserving the Legacy: Remaining Relevant for the Future’.
Speaking at the media launch for its anniversary celebrations on Tuesday, Johnson said that for six decades, the JTA has helped to shape the education landscape. This milestone, he said, presents an opportunity for the association to look forward as it seeks to preserve its legacy.
“We stand on the threshold of a new era of education, one that demands innovation, adaptability and a renewed commitment to excellence. The JTA, with its legacy of resilience and dedication, is poised to lead the charge in navigating these unchartered waters,” said Johnson.
“In an ever-evolving world, where societal norms, economic structures and labour markets undergo constant reforms, the relevance of the JTA is more vital than ever before. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, it is crucial to recognise and appreciate the enduring significance of the JTA in fostering a fair, just, and equitable education sector, which will ultimately lead to a transformed Jamaica,” he added.
Secretary general of the JTA, Mark Nicely, said that the milestone will be marked by a year-long celebration that will encapsulate the spirit of the JTA’s journey.
“This launch serves as a platform to involve a diverse spectrum of individuals who have been part of or influenced by the associations journey over the past six decades. As we celebrate our achievements, we proudly acknowledge the profound impact and contribution of the JTA to the nation over the past 60 years,” said Nicely.
The anniversary celebrations will kick off with a church service on March 31, 2024, ending with the Vilma Lawes Run on February 11, 2025.
Activities scheduled for 2024 include an education conference, an anniversary lecture with guest speaker Dr Errol Miller, the Women Committee Awards Function, parish awards ceremonies, an anniversary past president appreciation function, and an anniversary conference.
The President Banquet and Awards ceremony will kick-start celebration activities in 2025, followed by a series of newspaper and magazine publications by the JTA. The 60th Anniversary Gala is set for April 2, 2025, followed by the Vilma Lawes Run.
