Dr Kimberley Johnson redefines beauty in Jamaica
IN the heart of Kingston resides a medical practice unlike any other. Skyn by Dr Kym, helmed by the visionary Dr Kimberley Johnson, transcends the conventional boundaries of aesthetic medicine, offering a unique blend of science, creativity, and empowerment for its patients.
Dr Johnson, one of only two American Board Certified Aesthetic Medical Physicians in Jamaica, isn’t just a doctor; she’s a leader, a changemaker, and a trailblazer who wields her skills to not only enhance appearances and improve basic healthcare, but also cultivate awareness, confidence and self-love.
Her journey, however, wasn’t always a walk in the park. It was one marked by financial challenges. That said, she maintained an exceptional academic record throughout her schooling, showcasing an unwavering commitment to excellence from a young age. A self-funded student throughout her medical school years, Dr Johnson juggled the demands of academia with raising her young sister, demonstrating a strong resilience and dedication that continues to define her career.
“While pursuing my traditional medical career, I was always interested in exploring innovative approaches to the many sides of healthcare delivery,” she told All Woman.
She said her own struggles with acne and hyperpigmentation led to her change in career path.
“Dealing with my own skin challenges due to polycystic ovarian syndrome made finding the right treatment challenging. Successfully treating my own skin and garnering impressive results led me to specialise in aesthetic medicine,” she explained.
In 2023, Dr Johnson made the shift from public health to opening her own practice to allow her to deliver healthcare and skincare, her way.
“The shift from public health was mainly the need to ‘level up’. I knew I needed to shift focus to a career path that was more fulfilling and allowed me the opportunity to really impact others,” she said.
Skyn by Dr Kym was born out of the desire to empower people to take control of their own health and skin. Going beyond traditional cosmetic care, Dr Johnson’s approach prioritises education as empowerment.
“Rather than dictating to my patients, my approach focuses on guiding them through their medical and wellness journeys — whether aesthetic or general — and helping them each to achieve their own unique versions of self-discovery and confidence,” she said.
When asked about her approach, Dr Johnson shared, “My team and I aim to provide a comfortable and inspiring experience at our facility, addressing healthcare challenges through high-quality, science-backed care. We specialise in the latest skin and anti-ageing procedures, prioritising regenerative skincare for long-lasting, natural results.”
Skyn by Dr Kym boasts an array of cutting-edge procedures, from Botox, dermal fillers and laser lipo to PDO thread lift, Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) hair restoration and ultrasonic body cavitation. The offering also includes general medical services such as Pap smears, school and professional medicals, nebulisations, IV vitamin therapy and medical consultations.
“My goal is to, in the future, develop a skincare line delivering effective, non-irritating acne care and addressing hyperpigmentation concerns in people of colour,” explained Dr Johnson, beaming with pride.
Dr Johnson entered this niche fuelled by a passion for enhancing beauty through artistry in medicine.
“I would describe myself as someone who has mastered the ‘art of science’. To me, maintaining and enhancing what each individual considers beauty is art.”
She went on to express that, “what sets me apart is passion and skill. I invested in my training, in educating, and equipping myself with the latest research and information, as I owe it to anyone who sits in front of me to deliver the best. By doing so, I consistently deliver tangible results to my patients who are willing to take the next step. My patients feel that passion and dedication to their results in the delivery of service, their routine and follow-up.”
Looking forward, Dr Johnson hopes for more structure in Jamaica’s medical field, envisioning an accredited training and specialisation programme that recognises aesthetic medicine as an industry with huge economic potential. She will continue her mission to redefine perceptions of aesthetics, urging individuals to view these treatments as more than just a pursuit of ‘looking different’, but instead as a means to look and feel better from the inside out.
Her message to aspiring practitioners is clear — “Seek expert training, invest in being a credible practitioner, and understand that sustainable success requires sacrifice, resilience, and adaptability.”
Dr Johnson’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and a genuine desire to empower others. In a world obsessed with quick fixes, she stands out as a beacon of personalised care, artistic vision, and a commitment to excellence, making her a true leader in the ever-evolving field of aesthetic medicine.
