Pinnock and four compatriots on Bowerman Watch List
WORLD Athletics Championships finalists Wayne Pinnock and Lamara Distin are among five Jamaicans who were named on the Bowerman award Mid-Indoor Watch List that was released earlier this week.
Pinnock, of University of Arkansas, was the silver medallist in the men’s long jump at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, last year while Distin was fifth in the women’s high jump.
High jumper Romaine Beckford, also of University of Arkansas, and long/triple jumper Ackelia Smith of University of Texas, who were also on the pre-season list, have been included as well as sprinter Brianna Lyston of Louisiana State University (LSU).
Pinnock, the Bowerman website said, “needed one jump to remind everybody that he is ready to win his first NCAA title after a runner-up finish last year.” This was when he produced a world-leading 8.34m jump at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic last weekend.
Distin, a three-time NCAA champion who will be seeking his third-straight indoor title next month, has competed only once this season, clearing 1.94m for second best in the NCAA.
This is the eighth time Distin has been included on the Bowerman list.
Beckford, who competed at the World Championships last year, “appears to have picked up where he left off last year — and then some. The reigning NCAA indoor and outdoor high jump champion cleared a collegiate-leading 2.27m at the Razorback Invitational this past weekend,” the Bowerman website said. “That marked a (personal record) for the Jamaican.”
Smith, the NCAA Division 1 long jump champion last year, produced a stunning series at the New Mexico meet with a best of 6.85m and inclusive of three other jumps of at least 6.70m. He is being named to the watch list for a fourth time.
After a mostly quiet first season Lyston exploded with a 7.07-second clocking in the women’s 60m at the Razorback Invitational — the fourth-best ever in the NCAA — tying the LSU programme record by running 7.14 seconds in the preliminaries.
