Speed on Wheels makes promising start to career
It is difficult to forecast the future of any young horse, especially when they are running for the first time, but preliminary observations indicate that three-year-old grey filly Speed on Wheels has a promising future ahead of her.
Running against five other horses after the scratch of Another Mission, another highly-rated filly, Speed on Wheels made light work of competitors in the $1.05-million Eight Thirty Sprint over the 5-furlong (1,000m) straight course on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
The Howard Jaghai trainee won the race by 11 ¼ lengths, hitting the line in 1:02.3 (23.2 x 47.4) in the maiden special weight contest for native-bred three-year-old fillies.
While the final time is not that flashy, Jaghai believes the performance was a clear indication of a horse with talent.
“It was a very good performance from a debutant. I mean Speed on Wheels was eased down a furlong out by Tevin [Foster], which showed that she had a lot left in the tank. We actually own her sire, Spieth, who is finally establishing himself,” Jaghai told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“Her preparation coming into the race was very good. She did some fast splits out the gates on a couple of occasions, and it turned out well on Saturday. She’s still as happy as she was before the race. I’m taking it one step at a time with her. This victory is my 105th, and I’m still going strong,” he added.
Speed on Wheels contested the lead with Kencia (Dane Dawkins) and Ruby’s Light (Oshane Nugent) after a fast start. Kencia took the lead after the first furlong and a half (300m), but
Speed on Wheels swiftly caught up and was on her way, opening her account right away.
Kencia was second and Ruby’s Light was third.
