Pinnock and Smith lead Jamaicans getting AOW honours
Long jumpers Wayne Pinnock of the University of Arkansas and Ackelia Smith of the University of Texas, who both had NCAA leading marks last weekend, were among six Jamaican student/athletes who were recognised earlier this week for their outstanding performances.
Pinnock, who is also the world leader in the men’s indoor long jump after he opened his account with 8.34m to win at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, and Smith as well as Shaquena Foote of San Diego State, Shevioe Reid of the University of South Florida, Kimeone McLeod of Florida A&M University and Yekini Bowen of Iowa Western were all named athletes of the week in their respective conferences.
Pinnock was named the South-eastern Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after he improved his previous indoor best from 8.33m, as he remains 10th on the collegiate all-time list as well as the third best by a Jamaican and fourth at Arkansas.
Smith, whose 6.85m, which was also registered at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday, was named the Big 12 Conference women field event athlete of the week, as she won her second title in the event this season.
Her world lead lasted a mere 48 hours, as her training partner Tara Davis-Woodhall passed her with a jump of 6.86m at the New Balance meet in Boston.
Foote was recognised by the Mountain West Conference for the second time this season after she ran 53.26 seconds for third place in the women’s 400m at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, lowering her personal best and San Diego State’s record from the 53.30 seconds she had run two weeks prior.
Her time leads the Mountain West Conference and is 32nd in the NCAA. She also ran 7.49 seconds in the 60m dash, her first time running the short sprint this season.
Reid, who ran a South Florida programme record 20.67 seconds in the men’s 200m at Boston University’s Bruce Lehane Scarlet and White Invitational — the 10th fastest in the NCAA — was named the American Athletics Conference AC Men’s Track Athlete of the week.
He was also a part of the South Florida men’s 4x400m team that ran 3:07.78 seconds, the 20th best time in the NCAA.
Sprint hurdler Kimeone McLeod of Florida A&M lowered her school record to 8.35 seconds in the 60m hurdles at the South Carolina Invitational and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Bowen, the former Petersfield High athletes, who won the boys’ Class One throws double at the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Champs last year and now attends Iowa Western Community College, was named the Iowa Community College Athletics Association male field events athlete of the week after setting personal bests last weekend.
He threw 17.87m in the men’s weight throw and 15.74m in the shot put, both leading marks in the National Junior College Athletics Association rankings.
