Bad road influences woman to run as independent
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — A Manchester woman, who on Thursday was nominated as an independent candidate for the Knockpatrick Division in Manchester Central, said the deplorable road condition in her community influenced her decision.
A confident Dorrett Elliott told reporters that her appeals to repair the road in her community of Brokenhurst fell on deaf ears.
“I decided that next election I will throw my hat in the ring, because that road, I want it [fix]…I am confident. I will be the winner. I want to make a difference. Not only my road alone, there is no running water, few street lights, pure craters in the road,” she said.
“As a business woman for over 34 years, persons know me in the community…it is the mind of the people and they need change too. For more than a year now we don’t have a councillor in the area,” she added in reference to the seat being vacant following the passing of Councillor Cleon Francis (Jamaica Labour Party) in 2022.
Elliott will contest the election against Karl Smith representing the People’s National Party and Adeka “Newsman” Miller representing the Jamaica Labour Party.
