FROM WINE, WITH LOVE
Valentine’s Day, a global celebration of love and affection, is often accompanied by romantic gestures of warmth, passion, and intimacy as couples seek to create memorable experiences. Red wine stands out as a timeless, exquisite choice that embodies the essence of romance, offering luxurious textures guaranteed to ignite the passion of your celebration of love. Today, in the second of our two-part feature, we will explore the fascinating world of red wine through three distinguished red varieties that thrive in Argentina: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and of course, Malbec. As a reputed elixir of love, red wine possesses its own unique character, so differentiating between types and understanding their nuances can elevate your Valentine’s Day experience.
With its origins dating back to ancient Rome and the festival of Lupercalia which honoured the god of fertility, Valentine’s Day then evolved into a celebration of love and courtship by the Middle Ages. This evolution gave way to the now-annual worldwide celebration on February 14, where couples exchange cards, gifts, and other expressions of affection. Red wine, with its rich hues and complex flavours, has been intertwined with romance throughout history and its deep red and purple tones have long been associated with passion and love. This connection, however, is not merely symbolic as red wine has certain characteristics that make it a fitting choice for romantic occasions.
Made from dark-coloured grape varieties, its distinct colour comes from the grape skins during the fermentation process, as the skins contain pigments called anthocyanins, which contribute to the wine’s vibrant red, purple, or even brownish hues. Additionally, red wine contains tannins, compounds found in grape skins, seeds, and stems, which give the wine its characteristic astringency. One of the key components in red wine is resveratrol, a polyphenol with antioxidant properties and, while research into its health benefits is ongoing, some studies suggest that moderate consumption may have positive effects on heart health. In fact, its consumption is believed to potentially enhance the cardiovascular system, which is often associated with love and emotion.
The aroma, or bouquet, of red wine adds another layer to its allure, offering complex scents ranging from fruity to earthy, that can evoke a sense of nostalgia, trigger memories, and enhance the overall sensory experience. These olfactory elements play a crucial role in creating a romantic atmosphere, making red wine a perfect complement to any Valentine’s Day celebration. Not all red wines are created equally, though, and selecting the right variety will certainly enhance your celebratory evening of love. To help you make the right choice,
Thursday Food features three, well-suited red grape options, from three different regions of Argentina, that can make your Valentine’s Day a truly memorable one.
Cabernet Sauvignon, known for its bold flavours and robust tannins, is an excellent choice for those who enjoy a full-bodied red wine. Its deep red colour and notes of blackcurrant and cherry make it a classic and elegant option for a romantic evening.
Casarena DNA Cabernet Sauvignon is a 94-point, 100 per cent varietal that is featured amongst the top 100 wines of Argentina by James Suckling. Produced by Casarena Bodega from vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo, this wine is a deep garnet red in colour. On the nose, its aromas are of red and black fruit combined with notes of pyrazine and a menthol background. In the mouth it exhibits flavours of candied fruit, has impressive volume, with marked tannins, and ends in a long finish.
Mascota Vineyards Magnanime Cabernet Sauvignon is made from 100 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon in the La Consulta area of the Uco Valley by Mascota Vineyards. This 95-point wine, which features among James Suckling’s top 100 wine rankings for Argentina, is intensely red with brick red hues. Its aromas are delicate and complex, reminiscent of ripe red fruits and crème de cassis. On the palate, it is a wine of impeccable character, with a round, velvety texture and melted tannins that extend to a long, silky finish.
Pinot Noir is celebrated for its delicate and nuanced flavours, which can include notes of red berries, cherry, and a subtle earthiness. It is the perfect wine for those who prefer a lighter yet sophisticated option for Valentine’s Day.
Chacra Treinta y Dos Pinot Noir is a 99-point, 100 per cent Pinot Noir that claimed second place in James Suckling’s top 100 wine rankings for Argentina. This wine is made by Bodega Chacra in Patagonia from vineyards located in the Rio Negro area of the province. It is the most structured of all Chacra’s wines, expressing aromatic notes of toasted spice and mesquite with a macerated cherry fruit character. In the mouth it has soft characteristics and velvety tannins, which maintain a balance, while remaining fresh through its mineral-tinged finish.
Argentine Malbecs are celebrated for their bold and robust characteristics having found their true expression in the high-altitude regions of Mendoza. Their deep, inky colour sets the stage for a wine that is both visually striking and palate-pleasing, with flavours of dark fruit like blackberry, plum, and sometimes hints of blueberry. It is an ideal choice for those who appreciate full-bodied red wines that encapsulate the essence of passion and romance.
Cafayate Estate Malbec Etchart (formerly Cafayate Reserve Malbec) is a 100 per cent varietal that was featured in British
GQ last month as one of the best red wines to sip and savour in 2024. Produced by Bodegas Etchart in the Salta province, this 93-point wine, which previously won a silver medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards, is deep red in colour with violet hues. On the nose, it is intense with characteristic descriptors of the variety (violets, plums and raisins), vanilla (provided by its ageing in oak) and delicate spicy notes. These aromas are an expression of the typicality of the Cafayate Valley. Meanwhile, on the palate, it is structured with good body and ends in a long finish.
Red wine’s diverse varieties and captivating characteristics provide the perfect accompaniment to any romantic Valentine’s Day celebration. Whether you choose the bold and passionate Malbec, the regal and robust Cabernet Sauvignon or the romantic heartbeat of Pinot Noir, each red wine brings its own charm to the table. By selecting the right wine, planning a thoughtful pairing, and creating a romantic ambiance, you can elevate your Valentine’s Day experience to a memorable and indulgent celebration of love and connection. Cheers to a romantic and flavourful Valentine’s Day!
