Trelawny police head warns against illegal gathering in Lorrimers Division during local gov’t elections
TRELAWNY, Jamaica— Commander of the Trelawny Police Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Winston Milton has issued a stern warning to supporters of the two major political parties in the Lorrimers Division that traditional gathering in the proximity of the polling station at Lowe River Primary School, will not be tolerated during the February 26 local government elections.
“Lorrimers Division, we will not countenance any illegal assembly at the Lowe River School on the night of the election or the day of the election,” DSP Milton said.
“Candidates, campaign managers and other vital campaign workers when you are addressing your people, those who are involved in the political process with you and those who are your supporters at the meeting etcetera, ensure that this is communicated,” he added.
DSP Milton revealed that a strong contingent of members of the security forces will be stationed at the school to ensure that no gathering will be near the polling station during the day or night of the election.
“We will ensure that we have adequate security presence at the location to treat with this (illegal gathering). We are soliciting your cooperation. But we also have a responsibility. Persons must be able to cast their ballots without fear. Election process in Jamaica should be free and fair. So when persons cast their ballot they should go home. There shouldn’t be any assembly,” DSP Milton stressed.
“There should be no cooking of any pots, ‘running any boats’ so to speak or consumption of any alcohol or having any music being played outside of a polling station or a polling location. This is an appeal to you,” he added.
The Lorrimers Division is located in the constituency of Trelawny Southern.
DSP Milton was addressing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and People’s National Party (PNP) representatives who are expected to contest the upcoming local government elections, during a meeting at the Falmouth Police Station on Monday.
