Females dominate JUNO Reggae Recording of the Year category
For the first time since the category was introduced in 1985, females dominate the JUNO Award for Reggae Recording of the Year.
The nominations in the 53rd staging of the event, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammys, were announced Tuesday in Toronto at a press conference held at the CBC Building in Toronto.
The nominees are Stir This Thing by Ammoye featuring Turbulence, Feel Like Home by Exco Levi, Roots Girl by Jah Mila, Dread by Kirk Diamond and Finn and Rush Dem by Omega Mighty featuring 4Korners and Haviah Mighty.
This is the seventh nomination for Ammoye, who is originally from Clarendon, and the 11th for Exco Levi (who is originally from Manchester). Exco Levi has won the award five times.
This is the first nod for both Jah Mila and Omega Mighty, while this is the third nomination for Finn and the sixth for Kirk Diamond. Diamond and Finn won last year for Reggae Party featuring Kairo McLean.
The JUNO Awards, which recognises excellence in Canadian popular music over the past year, will be held in Halifax, Canada on March 23.
