With February 14 fast approaching, the air is filled with the anticipation of romance and the desire to create moments that linger in the heart. Amid the various elements that contribute to the perfect celebration, the choice of wine plays a significant role. White wines, with their diverse profiles and versatility, provide an ideal canvas for painting a masterpiece of love and connection on Valentine’s Day. They are often associated with elegance and finesse, coming in an array of styles, each expressing the unique characteristics of the grape varietal and the terroir where they are cultivated. From crisp and refreshing to the luscious and aromatic, white wines offer a spectrum of flavours that can complement a wide range of occasions, especially one as special as Valentine’s Day.
Chardonnay, often referred to as the “queen of white wines”, reigns supreme in the world of elegance and versatility. Hailing from vineyards bathed in sunlight, the Chardonnay grape thrives in various climates, allowing Argentine winemakers to craft wines that range from crisp and mineral-driven to opulent and buttery. The beauty of Chardonnay lies in its chameleon-like ability to showcase diverse styles. Unoaked Chardonnay grapes offer a crisp and bright profile, emphasising the grape’s natural acidity, while oaked Chardonnay introduces layers of complexity with notes of vanilla, butter, and a creamy texture. Whether unoaked, fermented and aged in stainless steel, or oaked, ageing in oak barrels, this wine appeals to multitudes of wine devotees the world over.
Despite not being as widely celebrated as Chardonnay, Sémillon is a hidden gem that deserves a spotlight for its unique characteristics and incredible ageing potential. Sémillon wines are known for their delicate aromas of lemon, green apple, and sometimes a hint of chamomile, while having a velvety texture on the palate which provides a luxurious mouthfeel that sets it apart from other white wines. One of the most intriguing aspects of Sémillon is its ability to age gracefully as, unlike many white wines that are best enjoyed young, Sémillon evolves beautifully over time. The crisp acidity of youth transforms into a honeyed richness, and the wine gains complexity, making it a cellar-worthy choice for those who appreciate the magic of aged whites. Here are five of our top white wine picks for this Valentine’s Day:
La Linterna Finca El Tomillo Parcela No 1 Chardonnay, produced from vineyards in Tupungato, Mendoza by Bemberg Estate Wines, topped the 2024 Descorchados ranking of Argentina’s best white wines with a 98-point score. It is a highly concentrated white wine, having the structure of a red wine that is full-bodied with an unctuous palate, while maintaining its freshness and vitality with a lovely balance of fruits. It is a wine that is both generous and elegant at the same time, having great character, with a delicious saline finish.
Cadus Single Vineyard Sabaquin Chardonnay, produced by Cadus Wines from vineyards in the Los Árboles area of the Tunuyán region in Mendoza, earned a top 10 ranking from Descorchados as well as a 96-point score. This 100 per cent Chardonnay is a greenish yellow wine that is aromatically elegant, combining white flowers such as acacia and chamomile, with citrus fruits such as lime and white-fleshed fruits such as peach and pear. The wine’s complexity is enhanced by the very integrated aromas of the wood derived from its time ageing in French oak. In the mouth, its volume and creaminess stand out, which are combined with a texture that is vibrant, having crisp acidity in its finish.
Terroir Series Finca Las Piedras Chardonnay is a 100 per cent varietal produced by Trapiche Wines in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, that found a place among the top 10 wines on the Descorchados 2024 rankings with 96 points. A very fresh wine, its aromatic complexity is enhanced by delicate notes of vanilla and honey obtained from its ageing in French oak barrels. In the mouth, it has a refreshing entry, with very good acidity and complexity, revealing mineral and fruity notes. A hint of vanilla on the palate also makes it very attractive and unctuous, resulting in a wine with a marked structure and long finish.
Finca Los Membrillos Sémillon has the distinction of being the only such varietal amongst the Chardonnays in the top 10 white wines of the 2024 Descorchados rankings for Argentina. This 100 per cent varietal, which scored 97 points, is produced by Zuccardi Wines in the Altamira area of the Uco Valley, Mendoza.
