Patience brings success for Abigail Able
Following Abigail Able’s victory aboard Fly Messenger Fly in the fourth race on Sunday, January 21, 2024, the young energetic rider stated that her goal now is to gain more rides and possibly win more races.
Able brought the Jason DaCosta-trained
Fly Messenger Fly from last position to first in a native-bred five-year-old and upward (non-winners of four) and imported five-year-old and upward (non-winners of three) over 7 ½ furlongs.
Fly Messenger Fly won by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:35.4 (24.1 x 47.3 x 1:13.2).
“I feel good. Thanks to the trainer. I was patient with my mount. I was waiting on the right time to move and I moved at the perfect time and that was that,” Able told the
Jamaica Observer’s
The Supreme Racing Guide.
“I wasn’t worried at any point during the race. Once I saw
She’s Fantastic approach
Prissie, I knew that the race was all mine. I got the opening and it carried me to the winning post. This season will be a better season for me.
“Like everyone else, I want to win many races, and to do that I must first get the rides to do so. Whenever I get the good ones [rides], I make full use of them. Success only comes with hard work and I am all about hard work. I am willing to go the extra mile and to do the extra work as well,” Able said.
Jockey Christopher Mamdeen rushed
She’s Fantastic into the early lead and the five-year-old dark bay mare led down the backstretch, followed by
Prissie (Oshane Nugent),
JJ Warrior (Roger Hewitt), and
Traditional Lady (Tevin Foster), with
Fly Messenger Fly trailing the field of six horses.
As the half-mile mark approached,
Prissie jumped to the front and immediately began to open up the field into the bend, with Able chasing aboard
Fly Messenger Fly.
Fly Messenger Fly joined
Prissie in deep stretch, and with momentum on her side, the five-year-old chestnut mare cruised to an easy victory at the finish.
Prissie came in second, while
Traditional Lady took the third spot.
