Mello Vibes celebrates 23 years this Saturday
Retired 100m sprinter Asafa Powell doesn’t hide the fact that he is a lover of old school music. Songs such as Dennis Brown’s Here I Come, Beres Hammond’s I Feel Good, Sanchez’s cover of Larry Graham’s One in a Million You, and Barrington Levy’s Here I Come are among his favourite songs.
Powell has been spotted at the popular retro party series Mello Vibes a few times dancing up a storm with his wife Alyshia.
“I have been in Kingston for 23 years exactly and have always heard that Mello Vibes is one of the best events in Kingston, and I agree. I have attended this event over the years but not as frequent as I would like due to training and other commitments,” said Powell.
This Saturday, January 27, Mello Vibes celebrates its 23rd anniversary at the Mas Camp, Stadium North.
Dubbed ‘It’s a Celebration’, the event — which is sponsored by Guinness Smooth — will see the likes of DJ Liquid, DJ Krazy Kris, and DJ Kurt Riley providing the musical thrills for patrons to enjoy.
“What keeps me going is the fact that it’s real quality music. I’m a lover of old school music and music in general, plus the event is very organised. I enjoy the atmosphere and seeing older people enjoying themselves,” Powell shared.
Omar Perrin, promoter of Mello Vibes, said the event has evolved through the years.
“Mello Vibes has grown in offerings, execution and patronage over the past 23 years. We had our very first staging in June 2001 at the then Peppers Nightclub on Waterloo Road in Kingston,” he said, adding that, “The turnout then was exceptional for our first ever event, as that was our launch into curating events. The DJs were Kurt Riley and DJ Squeeze.”
He cited consistency in the product as the reason patrons continually supporting the event.
“The consistent delivery of excellent music and exceptional execution as well as the mellow vibe keeps the patrons coming back.”
Said Perrin: “At this weekend’s staging the patrons can expect the consistency with the music and vibe that they have come to know and love, coupled with amazing specials at the bar to enhance the experience and energy that makes the vibe ‘Mello.’”
Since June last year Guinness Smooth has partnered with Mello Vibes to deliver an elevated experience to patrons.
“Working with Guinness Smooth has been smooth sailing. The brands and both our teams are aligned in our target audience and commitment to flawless execution and delivery of an excellent product to the patrons,” Perrin disclosed.
