Man accused of injuring DHL worker to undergo psychiatric evaluation
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A very talkative Adrian Lewis, who is currently facing charges for injuring a DHL employee, on Wednesday exhibited great displeasure upon hearing the judge’s ruling that he must remain in police custody and undergo psychiatric evaluation.
Lewis appeared in the St James Parish Court on to face charges of unlawful wounding and resisting arrest.
According to court records, on July 5, 2023 around 8:30 pm, Lewis made his way to the DHL branch on Sunset Boulevard in Montego Bay and reported an incident. He claimed that an individual employed at the business establishment had driven their vehicle over his feet, causing him physical harm.
During their interaction, a dispute arose between Lewis and the employee, and he allegedly inflicted a wound to one of the complainant’s hands.
The matter was reported to the police and the defendant was arrested on Jimmy Cliff Boulevard later that day. The police said he resisted when they tried to arrest him.
“Did you injure the man’s hand?” presiding judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley asked Lewis in court.
“I went to DHL and told them that the man drove his car on me, and they gave me attitude…When I went to tell a lady about it, the man [complainant] got upset and threw hot beverage in my face…I then punched him once with a plastic thing and ran off,” Lewis stated.
“Was he supposed to see the doctor?” the judge then asked the officer.
However, before the officer got the chance to respond, Lewis blurted out, “Yes, they gave me three shots from back way enuh, and I dropped over the gully…The truck could have run over me because I dropped right beside the truck wheel.”
He continued: “I took all of my medication enuh, Miss, and I did everything that is right…I don’t trouble people, but the police dem just tek set on me…They kicked me, take away my food and beat me…I tried to stay out of trouble in every way, but I’m not getting any help.”
“You have an appointment to see the doctor [psychiatrist] on the 21st of February,” the judge then told the accused man.
“So, does this mean I won’t get away from this?” Lewis asked the judge.
“This means you will stay with the police until you have your doctor’s appointment and I get a report from the doctor,” Smith-Ashley told Ellis.
“Your Honour, that is not right. Nobody is helping me…I am the one who is helping myself…I took my medication, and now I’m told I have to stay in the lock-up in the meantime,” Lewis lamented.
The judge assured him that she would issue a directive to ensure he receives medical treatment for his injuries. She also reminded him of his scheduled appointment with the psychiatrist before remanding him into custody until March 21.
“I can’t live like this…No matter what is going on, I’m not getting any right. I’m tired of this,” Lewis complained as he was whisked away to the holding area.
