Jamaica’s Bicknell books semifinal spot in ATP Challenger Tour
Jamaica’s top tennis player, Blaise Bicknell, is set to compete in the semifinals of the ATP Challenger Southern California Open at Indian Wells against Andre Ilagan from the United States on Saturday.
Match time is 2:30pm Jamaica time.
Bicknell, enjoying excellent form this season, earned his spot in the last four by defeating Andre Holt in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Friday. The 22-year-old, currently ranked 364th in the world, won the first set against Holt, ranked 244th, and was leading 3-2 in the second set before Holt retired hurt.
Bicknell anticipates a challenging match against Ilagan, who is ranked 565th in the world, but expressed confidence in his ability to succeed.
“He is a lefty, and so he is going to be tough, but I just have to play my game, and I am confident that I will be successful on Saturday,” Bicknell, who will be competing in his second semifinal on the ATP Challenger Tour, told Observer Online.
Ilagan secured his spot in the semifinals with a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Thai-Son Kwiatkowski from the United States.
