Start the year right with these exercises
STARTING your New Year’s resolutions with a mix of cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercises can provide a well-rounded approach to fitness. Fitness trainer Lennox Richards said you can consider these exercises, which will inspire you to take on the fitness challenge for the long-term.
Cardiovascular exercises
Cardiovascular exercises elevate your heart rate and breathing for an extended period. These exercises have several benefits including improving heart health, burning calories and aiding in weight management, thus supporting weight loss goals. So get started with brisk walking or jogging, cycling, jump rope or dancing.
Strength training exercises
Strength training exercises provide numerous benefits for your overall health and fitness. They stimulate the growth of muscle fibres, leading to increased muscle mass and strength, and also boosts metabolism, and enhances joint health. So get started with bodyweight exercises (eg, squats, lunges, push-ups), as well as resistance training with bands or weights, and planks for core strength.
Flexibility exercises
Flexibility exercises such as stretching and yoga, offer a range of benefits for your body and overall well-being. They improve your range of motion, allowing for more fluid and efficient movement, and also reduce muscle tension.
Yoga or pilates help you with stretching routines for the major muscle groups. Remember to start gradually, especially if you’re new to exercising, and gradually increase intensity and duration.
“Consistency is key, and finding activities you enjoy will help you stick to your resolutions,” Richards said. “Regular exercise can have a positive impact on your mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and depression.”
He added: “Also, exercises that elevate your heart rate and release endorphins are great for boosting mood and making you feel upbeat.”
He also suggested feel-good exercises like hiking and nature walks, as well as outdoor sports like football or tennis.
